Emergency Room (ER) TN Visa Jobs

Canadian ER RNs, matched with US hospitals hiring under TN status.

Why US hospitals are hiring Canadian ER RN talent

Extreme domestic burnout rates are creating constant, urgent operational gaps in US emergency departments. Turnover in this specialty is higher than almost anywhere else in the hospital, and it isn't slowing down.

Canadian ER RNs are a natural fit because triage protocols, trauma response, and the pace of the work translate closely, with little retraining needed beyond facility-specific orientation.

What the role looks like

Licensing requirements in the US

Beyond TN status itself, a ER RN needs an active Registered Nurse license in the US state where you'll work. Canadian licensure doesn't transfer automatically. Most Canadian-trained RNs go through licensure by endorsement, which typically requires a credential evaluation (often through the same CGFNS process as VisaScreen), verification of your Canadian license and education, and a background check. Some states also require the NCLEX-RN exam if your original licensing exam isn't recognized as equivalent.

TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) and CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) are valued credentials. ACLS and PALS are commonly required; Level I/II trauma center experience is a strong asset for busier US EDs.

State licensing timelines vary widely, from a few weeks in faster states to several months in others, so we recommend applying to your target state's board of nursing as soon as you have a specific US location in mind, ideally in parallel with your VisaScreen application rather than after it.

Who's eligible

Realistic timeline

Every candidate's timeline looks a little different, but here's the general shape of it when VisaScreen and state licensing are started early and run in parallel with matching:

  1. Month 0-1: Matching

We learn your background and start matching you with US hospitals hiring for ER RN roles.

  2. Month 1-6: VisaScreen & state licensing (parallel)

VisaScreen typically takes 3-6 months; state RN licensure by endorsement runs on its own timeline, often 6-12 weeks once submitted, so starting both early matters.

  3. Once matched: Job offer

A formal offer triggers the ability to finalize TN sponsorship paperwork.

  4. At the border: TN application & entry

With your job offer letter, VisaScreen certificate, and state license in hand, TN status is generally granted the same day at a US port of entry.

Most candidates who start VisaScreen and licensing early are border-ready in roughly 4-8 months. Waiting until after a job offer to start those two steps is the single most common cause of a longer timeline.

Who's a good fit

You thrive on unpredictability, can triage quickly under pressure, and stay calm when priorities shift minute to minute. You're comfortable being the first clinical eyes on a patient before a full picture exists.

For Canadian RNs

If you're currently practicing in Emergency, TN status can get you into a US ED without the H-1B lottery. Trauma center experience and current certifications will strengthen your match.

For US Employers

Fill ER vacancies with credentialed Canadian RNs, full-time or contract/travel, matched to your department's acuity and volume.

Read this before you anchor to a number: this table reflects region-level market research compiled across US metro, secondary, and rural healthcare markets for Emergency Room (ER). Actual pay depends on the specific employer, union contract, shift differentials, and current market conditions, and changes over time. Treat it as a planning reference, not a quote, and always confirm actual compensation directly with the employer before accepting an offer.

Questions specific to this specialty

Is trauma center experience required?

Not always, but Level I/II trauma center experience is a strong asset for the busiest US EDs.

What shift patterns are typical?

Most US EDs run 12-hour shifts with rotating days and nights, similar to Canadian ED scheduling.

Will my Canadian nursing education be recognized in the US?

Generally yes, Canadian nursing education is well-regarded and typically satisfies US equivalency requirements, but it still needs to be formally verified through the VisaScreen and state licensure processes rather than assumed.
